Every dinar in its place

The ch'hiha: the clay piggy bank of Algerian families

In the West, people save in a piggy bank. In Algeria, we save in a ch'hiha (الشحيحة): a small jar shaped by hand from clay, a mix of earth and water, with a single slot on top. To get the money out, you have to break it, so you think twice before touching it.

  • Made of earth and water

Shaped by hand, dried and fired, sometimes painted with patterns like Kabyle pottery.

  • Filled coin by coin

Every coin slipped through the slot is a small effort. Together, they add up.

  • Broken on the big day

You only break the ch'hiha once the goal is reached: Eid, back to school, a gift. It's a commitment, not just an account.
